Waterways

MAFSA stocks a wide variety of waterways in the district.

Dams

You will need a Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) to fish Eungella, Teemburra and Kinchant dams. You can obtain a permit from local tackle shops or read all about the permit scheme and get one online here.

Eungella Dam

Eungella Dam is situated on Broken River, a tributary of the Burdekin River, as is located 115km west of Mackay.

The road to the Broken River National Parks Camping area is bitumen with the remaining 32km to Eungella Dam being gravel (this section has just had an upgrade and the road is in good condition).

The dam has basic camping facilities.

The dam has been stocked with fish from the late 1980's and include barramundi, sooty grunter and a healthy sleepy cod population.

Eungella Dam is known for the large sooty grunters regularly caught.

The dam also hosts waterskiers and an abundant variety of wildlife. Platypus and swans can be seen in the upstream section of this unique environment.

Permits to camp at this dam can be obtained in the campgrounds.

Teemburra Dam

Teemburra Dam is located approximately 60km west of Mackay on Eungella Road with the turnoff at Pinnacle.

Teemburra Dam is 1085ha and has scenic picnic areas in Teemburra and Middle Creeks. This dam has large areas of standing timber and structures.

MAFSA has stocked this dam from 1998 with barramundi and sooty grunter.

Recreation facilities are available with day facilities only.

Dam use currently excludes water skiing and jet skis due to the standing timber and structure close to the surface.

A good boat ramp exists with facilities currently under construction.

Teemburra Dam's reputation as a great fishery is continuing to grow year by year and the number of visitors continues to increase.

Kinchant Dam

Kinchant Dam is 40km from Mackay. This dam can be accessed from the Peak Downs Highway at Eton or from Eungella Road at Marian or Mirani.

The dam has a surface area of 920ha and has been stocked with barramundi since 1999, sooty grunter and sleepy cod.

Although not stocked by MAFSA, redclaw have become a sought after species in the dam.

A small resort, Kinchant Waters is located at the dam with accommodation, camping and a bar and restaurant.

The dam is a popular location for fishing, water skiing and other water sports. It has barbecues and a good day visitors area.

Wildlife is always able to be seen in the day visitors area and a large variety of waterbirds inhabit the dam area.

Middle Creek Dam

This dam has yet to be stocked due to low water levels however we have a permit to stock it with Barramundi. The dam is located at the head waters of Plane Creek west of Sarina.

Weirs on Rivers & Creeks

Plane Creek

The four central weirs on Plane Creek in Sarina have been stocked with Barramundi. These weirs are Power Alcohol, Mill, Jacksons and Council weirs.

Pioneer River

The 3 primary weirs on the Pioneer River have just received permits for stocking with Barramundi. These weirs are Mirani, Marian and Dumbleton weirs.
